The Ensign Region IV Championships finished
after
three great days of sailing. The overall championship goes to Jonathan
Baker
from Austin.
On Thursday, there were a total of two races and
one
practice prior to starting. The winds were about 13-15mph all day and
the
racing was a windward/leeward course. The racing was close for most of
the
fleet. The Hollister’s had everyone over after the races for a nice
dinner
and chat.
On Friday, there were three races with one
triangle
and two windward/leeward races. The winds built all day and proved to
be the
real competition for everyone. The signal boat said it was a steady 15
with
some higher gusts but it sure seemed closer to 20 to everyone out on
the
course. There were some really, really close finishes (maybe half a
boat
length and even closer). On Friday night, there were burgers and dogs
for 39
at the Porthole at HYC before hit sack for some much needed rest.
Saturday racing was light air racing for the
most
part of the day. The races started with a short postponement or maybe
20
minutes or so. The postponement was more due to the shifting wind
rather
than wind speed. The racing was again close amongst the top competitors
but
Jonathan Baker took first overall with Tom Meeh taking second in a tie
breaker, and Danny Lien in third. The banquet took place in the HYC
Ballroom
with a nice buffet for 29.
