We’re not just another sport boat nor do we ever want to be.
We¹re just the best family day sailer/racer that has ever been invented. Unfortunately the last New Ensign was built in 1983. But that¹s all about to change! Ensign Spars Inc. has just become the new licensed New Ensign builder of the Classic Ensign day sailor/racer through a unique arrangement with the National Ensign Class Association. The Ensign is by far the perfect boat to teach your family how to learn the art of small boat sailing. It’s safe, stable, and sails like a larger full keel boat. Its large roomy cockpit (that you sail in, instead of sailing on) makes it ideal for taking even up to 7 fiends out at a time. Which incidentally is beautifully designed in the classic hardwoods that the older classic boats were remembered for. The Ensigns 3ft.foot full keel and 1200 pounds of ballast the Ensign sails like a much bigger boat getting its famous sailing characteristic as the little big boat. Even with its large full keel displacement and handling characteristics it still has positive floatation.
For the more serious sailor the Ensign is an ideal family racer also. With its 4 head sail inventory, 140 sq ft Main , 150 sq ft No. 1 Genoa , and 375 sq ft Spinnaker the Ensign can turn into the ideal 3 to 4 man racing machine. Although the Ensign mostly is raced as a one design sailboat its PHRF rating is between 254 to 270 which it can easily keep up to. When your ready to join the racing fun you will be able to enjoy Regional and National competition , and over 45 active fleets throughout the U.S. The Ensign National Class Association is one of the oldest and well respected Class Associations in existence. The Ensign Nationals have the reputation of being the best kept secrets on one design racing. Our Nationals are still raced with a group of excellent sailors ,not Rock Stars. They believe in having the highest quality of racing but with fun and togetherness as the catalyst.
Here at Ensign Spars Inc. we are dedicated to create a more custom built boat then the original production boat that the Ensign was. We are going to concentrate on detail and workmanship and spend the extra time to build the new Ensign Classic. We plan to use the over 30 years of sailing these beautiful little yachts to make new and improved additions to modernize them to the 90¹s. The New Ensign will conform to the strict one design rules that all the previous 1962 Ensigns have endured over the years. Class legal options will be available such as low maintenance fiberglass floors and seats. Electronics, racing packages, trailers, and integrated systems that weren¹t available back in the 60¹s will be available to customize your New Ensign Classic.
