Region I announcement, revised 3/31/2010   NEW STUFF

The members of Oriental Fleet 15 are proud to have been selected to hold the 2010 Championship Regatta.  As one of the newly assigned NC fleets to the region, we are eager to meet and compete with it’s sailors.  On the weekend of June 12 & 13 we will schedule 5 races for the event.  We are currently engaged in crafting the plans necessary to make it an event to remember.  We expect to find housing for most visiting sailors and wives should they want, but the town does boast a number of really nice B&Bs.  We currently have commitment for 10 NC boats and are hopeful that we will get a good Turnout from the rest of the region.

Oriental is known statewide as the “Sailing Capital of North Carolina”.  We are a town of some 800+ residents, although the outlying areas swell the population to more than twice that.  Township literature says there are over 2,000 sailboats in town, many owned by folks who live in the interior and come here for the great sailing.  While not just retirees, many are, and they take advantage of the full schedule of racing and cruising activities.  We race PHRF, Ensigns, Lasers, Sunfish, Optis, and conduct national and regional championship regattas.  Each year we are asked to run the North Carolina Laser Master’s Championships.  Supporting Oriental’s passion for boats are many businesses that provide marine-related products and services for every sailing need.  In addition to marinas, boat brokerages and charter services, there are a number of full service boatyards, two nationally affiliated sailmakers, two sailing schools, a Captain’s license school, a chandlery, and a West Marine.

For those of you who are contemplating life after work and looking to move to a warmer climate to race your Ensign, beware, because many visiting sailors decide to stay.  It’s easy to fall in love with Oriental.  Along with great sailing, there is a social life here that will absolutely keep you hopping. I would encourage you to visit www.towndock.net, the unofficial but incredibly information packed Oriental website.

NEW EVENT.  Bring all your old/new boat parts that are cluttering up your storage.  We will set up a MARINE FLEA MARKET on Friday evening for us to swap, sell, or give away all that extra stuff.  I failed to mention earlier that we have a very good marine resale shop here, Marine Consignment of Oriental, and they may be able to deal with whatever you have left over or whatever else you may need.

                        MENTION Wickford??  What else?

NEW.  Please see the PHOTO posted here (Below) of the SOUVENIER SHIRT commemorating this regatta.  There is one shirt included in the entry fee for the skipper and an opportunity to order more.  Note that if the entry and fee is received by June 1 we will be able to put your boat name and number on the shirts.

The NOR can be found on this ECA website.

Call or e-mail me any time for further information.
