Nana Lives and Breaths! Restoration of 1658 Now Co...
Author Last Post

Thanks very much, Bud. She is already turning heads. I have had three purchase offers in the last two weeks.

The best thing that has happened is that the owner of a beautiful little Sakonnet 23 (formerly the queen of the local daysailers) told me that Nana was the prettiest boat on our local bay.

When I get a little time, I am likely to put up a gallery documenting the refit.

Wow!

Congratulations... a stunning refit.

She's simply beautiful and she'll be turning heads wherever she goes!

Best regards,

Thanks, Anna. Happy to help. I will contact you offline.

The last issue of the newsletter featured a history of this boat, which we had tentatively named "Bliss." During the project, my beloved mother-in-law, whom we affectionately knew as "Nana", died so I decided to use that name.

Stan, she looks fantastic! The Awlgrip really is tough to beat for a topside finish. Congrats!!

Your Endign refurb is magnificent - as editor of the ECA newsletter i would love to include an article featuring ‘Nana’.

It would be awesome if you sent me an article of your project journey and pictures i could use.

It would be wonderful to broadcast your journey!!

Many thanks

Thanks, Doug. They are African mahogany with raised panels. Done in my old wood shop. I put in a teak and holly sole but cannot put my hands on a photo right now.

As pretty as the boat is, it is the invisible and less noticeable things that please me the most. We rebuilt the cockpit floor beams, fixed a soft spot in the deck, rebuilt bunk risers on one side (old ones were wet), and decided to Awlgrip the mast and boom.

Here is another picture at the yard dock, trussed up and ready to go home.

Friday was the big day that we wrapped up my long delayed restoration of 1658. I took delivery from Deltaville Boatyard and motor sailed her home to my dock, a few miles up the Piankatank River. Sunday morning at 6:30 am, I was on the river for a quiet contemplative solo sail.

This was a decade long project. It was a complete refit delayed by a false start and an unexpectedly busy professional time for me. I stripped off the old hardware, sealed and faired everything and sourced all new parts and sails in 2014, including new roller furling, only to have the boat laid up for a few years while my wife and I moved to a different part of the state.

I did lot of the woodwork myself (new custom doors, cabin furniture/details, and cabin sole, among other things). This spring, Deltaville Boatyard in Deltaville, VA worked cooperatively with me to refinish the deck and hull with new Awlgrip, new Alwlwood for the brightwork, and to reassmble everything.

She sails like a dream. I attach a few pictures of the finished effort.

Many thanks to all of the kind people here who answered questions along the way, always pushing me in the right direction.
