Chain plate tangs
Jonathan Gorbold

How would you know??

I have recently had to mess with the chain plates on a couple of Ensigns in the 1200 series, Plebe Year 1217 and Questar 1226.

When Pete Kogut took the chain plates off Plebe Year he carefully bundled them into Port and Starboard bundles of 3 tangs. Come reassembly, I noticed that one of the 3 in each bundle had a “kink” in it.

The Turnbuckle hole is about 1/8” off center from the other two tangs.

After careful checking on the boat, the “straight” tangs mount for the forward lowers and uppers and the “kinked” tang mount for the rear lowers with the kink TOWARDS THE CENTER of the boat.

if you sight through the turnbuckle holes, you will find all three line up.

Its easy to assume all three tangs are the same and get them mixed up.

I have attached a photo.

Just to thoroughly confuse, I got it wrong when I posted this morning!
The kinked tang does mount for the aft lowers but the kink faces OUT.
And if you sight from the rear both forward and aft lowers turnbuckle holes look even about the uppers hole.
