Speedpuck
Author Last Post

Ron,

I would add that I have a Speed puck but have used it less and less over the years. have found that I get too focused on looking at the puck and reacting to it rather than looking at the sails and waves. That said have found it very useful in strong tide situations as the puck will give you a reading on course made good and you can compare that to compass course so that you can compensate for the tide and steer a straighter course.

Thanks Peter.

Hi Ron,

Rest assured the Velocitek Speedpuck is indeed legal and in fact used by many racers at the annual Ensign Class Association Nationals. The class, however, does not allow integrated electronic systems that perform calculations like VMG. Stand alone, compasses and speedometers are perfectly okay. A popular compass that is often used along with the Speedpuck is the Ray Marine Tack-Tick compass which reads your heading.

Best Wishes,

I am new to the class. I have been using a Velocitek Speedpuck on board for racing. From what I read in the rules, it is class legal. I see other older posts in the forum leading me to believe others are using it. Would someone please confirm for me that the Velocitek Speedpuck is class legal for use in official Ensign regattas.
