Spinnaker/Whisker Pole
Author Last Post

Rick,

The intention of the rule is that the whisker pole and spinnaker pole must be two separate poles, although the rule could probably be worded a bit better. Perhaps if a telescoping pole is developed that could function as both, the rule could be changed to reduce the amount of equipment onboard.

ECA VC of Rules

Rick,

I believe the requirement has more to do with the strength of the whisker pole not being up to the task of a spinnaker pole in breezy conditions. The Saratoga Lake Sailing school Ensign can verify that during last years Ensign Fleet 72 regatta. I know that in doing research on my telescoping whisker pole, Forespar specifically pointed out that it was not intended as a spinnaker pole.

Reading the rules I see that both are allowed and that the spinnaker pole can be used as a whisker pole but not vice versa. I assume this was due to the maximum length differences. Now that a telescopic whisker pole is allowed is there any reason that one pole can’t be used for both purposes if properly banded for measurement purposes?
