Whisker Pole Technique
Author Last Post
I'll take a picture of mine this week.  I have a pretty unique set up where the pole can remain extended and stay out of the way.  It's the reason I initially asked about the requirements.  I may choose a one piece over a telescoping pole.  Rowing oars are a cheap source of carbon fibre tubing.  We have a rowing program and they gave us several old carbon fibre oars that could be modified.  Myself and prior owner who is now crew for me have used a homemade one piece for years.

Hey Tony,
Both of your recent posts are very useful interesting.  I’d also be interested in seeing what those seat leg chocks look like and how they are mounted.

Nice contributions!
Dave

Ron,

In using the adjustable whisker pole we follow the same process you outlined. we also found that setting the pole length prior to use reduces the stress of trying to get the length set along with the pole setting process.

The issue with the adjustable pole we use is that when adjusting and locking the pole the jaw ends can end up in different orientations to each other. also, close attention needs to be given to locking the pole well enough so it doesn't un-extend itself after its set.

Another feature I added to the boat is mounting chocks to the seat legs for the pole to be kept while not in use.

I hope this helps.

I wonder if those of you who have used/are using whisker poles would discuss your "whisker pole technique". I have been using a one piece home made whisker pole for 2 years now. Prior owner who is my crew used it for many years. Our process is this:

  1. Set up on wing and wing course.
  2. Pole comes out from the cabin.
  3. Crew takes pole up on deck, sets sail end first, then mast. Generally this requires pulling the sail clew in close to snag a loop attached to the clew grommet, pushing out, and setting the pole end. We have bridle to open the jaws.
  4. As "pole crew" sets the sail end, crew 2 or skipper helps tail Genoa sheet.

I particularly want to hear from those who use a telescoping pole. When do you "telescope"? From the cockpit? Before any set? After the sail set?
