Winches
Author Last Post

Ron,

I installed Harken "Two Speed 16.2 " winches 10 years ago. The Harken base hardware fit nicely on the Ensign winch pedestal. However, I had to drill new holes because the base is larger than the original winches. I filled in the old holes with epoxy after creating a backer on the underside of the pedestal with duct tape to hold the epoxy in place while it hardened. Not difficult to do as long as the pedestal itself is solid. There is an excellent description of a complete pedestal rebuild in the ECA website library that was written by Bud Brown. It is a good read even if you are not doing something that extensive.

Anyone else who has done this, please chime in. Ron

Ahoy Zeke D!! Can you help me here? What will I run into removing an old set of winches and installing a set of Andersen #16s? I watched a video produced by Sail magazine that entailed grinding off all the nuts with a dremmel, replacing backing plates, tapping new threads in a new backing plate... Trying to determine if this is within my skill set... Ron

Yes, they were on #2016 when I bought it a couple of years ago. I replaced them with the self-tailing version. I remember my old Ensign, #340, had the kind of winch you describe on the cabin top. It was certainly a conversation piece.

A very nice offer.  Thanks.  Let me do a little checking to make sure I can use these.  Did you have them on an Ensign?

Hi Ron, I have a nice pair of Andersen #16 two speed winches. In perfect working condition. I'm not sure if the hole pattern is the same as yours. 2 photos attached. Space center to center of the 2 widest spaced holes is 9cm. $195 for the pair, and I'll include the cam cleats. You pay the shipping. Joe Burke, #2016

I have the old original winches on my boat. These are the kind that you actually insert the handle into from the side. I fear their days are numbered. Is there a modern replacement that will install without any modifications to the boat. Something that fits right in where the old one comes out?
