Just following up for anyone that may run across this thread in the future...

I purchased a tack hook and installed as described below. I tested it out in some gusty conditions today and it worked well. The reefed tack is a bit above the top of the boom, but I was able to get the foot tight when pulling back the reefed clew.

The boom cap which I just had to replace was threaded on one side so that our tack-pin (which has a dog-leg in it ) is easily secured;/removed without tools. I haven’t tried switching it to the reefing grommet, but I think that would get you where you want to go, so long as the reefed portion of the sail is cleared out of the way….

And maybe I should do this differently, but I don’t recall that my FIL did other than to install the cunningham in April and stow it in October…

I'm seeking advice on my reefing setup–specifically, the tack.

To date, I've used a cunningham to create the new, reefed tack when needed. This works, but I'd like to have something that's attached to the boom semi-permanently since I don't always have a cunningham rigged.

My tack pin is just a 1/4" stainless bolt. I'm thinking of attaching a tack hook to one side of it that would hold the reefing grommet. One potential issue I see with this is that the tack will be a couple inches above the top of the boom. But, with the clew pulled tight, I'm not sure if it's really a problem.

I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this, especially if you have a similar setup.
