Ensign Repairs- Hole Drilled
Author Last Post
I use a toilet bowl bolt.  The hole is 3/8".  I use Lifecaulk, so I can remove it in the winter.

I had a bronze garboard drain, until a yard destroyed the threads.  That's what I drilled smooth for the bolt.
Marine TEX  but installing a drain plug is a good idea. If you use something in Bronze you can ground your mast there too. Can open from either inside or outside.

Hey Jon,

What kind of caulking? This is really helpful. I haven't worked on an Ensign in like 20 years.

Jon,

Your nylon bolt seems to serve the same purpose as a Garboard drain, but would be much easier to install. (My boat does not have a drain, and that has been an issue every winter.)

What size hole did you drill?

It's useful to have a drain hole for the winter.  Mine is plugged by a nylon bolt with the nut inside.  I use a little caulk with it to keep it tight.

My husband and I are working on repairing our Ensign. The previous owner drilled a hole above the lead keel for easy trailer drainage. I want to cover up the hole. Should i use epoxy marine fairing or fiberglass to fix the repair? OR should you i cork it would any plug stay there and keep it sealed. I want to keep the boat in the slip. Please advise.
