Wind Vane or Windex

Not to revive a zombie thread but I know that a lot of people use this forum for restoration information so I thought I would contribute a reply.


I just replaced the windex on Nana (1658) as part of a top (literally) to bottom (literally) refit. I have been pleased with a very simple Windex 10 Sport model, as shown in the attached photo.

I tend to use Defender Marine. Their standard Ground shipping gets to me overnight, but if you live further away it may take longer.  For small items and things I need immediately there is always the West Marine retail store near me, and of course Ensign Spars for both general and Ensign specific items.

Vic, thanks so much for your comments and guidance on the Windex. I have a friend who will help me. These pictures will help immensely. I like the Windex you have shown in the picture. Do you have a preferred supplier in mind for Windex?

Donnie,

 

The mast is capped with a cast fitting, I believe made from aluminum, that has the attachment point for the backstay.  The top of the fitting is flat, but angled with respect to the mast.

 

My boat has an piece aluminum attached to the top of the mast cap using small screws that go into drilled and tapped holes in the fitting, and then the Windex is attached to the other end of that aluminum strip. See the attached photo.  From the perspective of the “furler” photo it seems that the Windex support rod is not parallel with the mast, the second photo, Windex on Mast, shows that it really is.

I need a new wind vane to mount to the top of the mast. I don't know which wind vane to purchase. Nor do I know how to mount it on top of the mast because I do not know what the top of the mast looks like. Does anyone have a picture of the top of the mast? Which wind vane should I purchase and from what supplier?
